What does PNG stand for?

In another field, geography, PNG stands for Papua New Guinea, a country in Oceania, in the southwestern Pacific, north of Australia. Its inhabitants are called Papuans. In our field of study, IT / design, PNG stands for Portable Network Graphics. It’s a compressed raster graphic format. Most of the time, we’re using PNG images without any background (with a fully transparent alpha channel around the illustration), which makes them perfect for design purposes. Because PNG files use lossless compression, like GIFs, they will usually look crisper than JPEGs.

But they’re also usually heavier than JPEGs. A best practice is to convert PNGs into SVGs (Scalable Vector Graphics) if you’re looking for a lighter image format.
